Boardnation was started in 2001 by Andrew Edtl, and was acquired in July of 2002 by Joshua Dickerson and David Recordon. These two individuals were determined to bring it back and make it better than it ever was and compete with other established hosts out there; this goal was met with overwhelming support. Being frustrated by ads and banners on all of the other message board hosts, they decided it was time for reform and not place a banner ad or pop-under on any part of a forum that normal members would see. Starting out with a big boom, they began to mold this service from the knowledge gained in working on open source message boards into a thriving hosting service. Boardnation was built on YaBBSE, a popular open source PHP and MySQL forum. In 2007, Boardnation was acquired by Kevin Connell of Portland, Oregon. Kevin has a storied career in the Portland area as a software developer, network manager and entrepreneur. Today, Boardnation is on the move: Boardnation 2, scheduled for release in Q4 of 2008, will be based on SMF, a leader in PHP based forum software that offers many high end features, and is extremely flexible, yet easy to use. Boardnation retains its goal of providing the absolute best and most reliable forums on the Internet, combined with a level of service that large corporate customers require from a hosting provider.
